STATEMENT

play and repeat is a structural narrative. A sequence of still photographs is repeated five times.  Each time it is intangibly manipulated as pixels and layered upon the previous sequence.  The piece builds upon its own form and eventually collapses and disintegrates into its own ephemerality, with the final image of a vase of flowers breaking down into blackness.  The five-part structure of repeating images, with each part including artifacts of the previous, is loosely based on the five-part Dog Star Man, in which Stan Brakhage manually manipulated layers of film to create effects like scratching and tinting in a way unique to film. The digital images in play and repeat, shot on the way to a screening of The Art of Vision (the expanded form of Dog Star Man), are layered and manipulated using software-generated effects unique to video. Composition, color and movement give way to accumulation, which ultimately is replacement in the digital grid of pixel information. 

play and repeat  investigates the nature of digital video itself, while exploring the visual experience for the viewer and the effect of the addition and removal of the indexical image on perception and memory.
